The Huggable and Squeezable Teddy

Teddy Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt was a big impact in his era, being President of the United States and being the leader of the Rough Riders.  Theodore Roosevelt is an important person to study when it comes to American History.  He is one of the most important presidents and had one of the biggest impact on American History.  Theodore Roosevelt was a big leader in the Rough Riders and the Rough Riders impacted in some wars under the command of Theodore Roosevelt.

Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858.  He was born in New York City, New York.  He was the second of four children born to his father Theodore Sr. and his mother Martha.  Theodore Jr. had bad health growing up and that affected him for all of his childhood.  He did have a huge love for animals and regularly attended zoos when he could.  He, also, found a dead seal at a market in New York and bought the head and stuffed the head himself.  His group of friends kept animals they killed in a thing they called the “Roosevelt Museum of Natural History.”  Roosevelt kept his love for animals as he grew older.

With the coming of the presidential election of 1884, Theodore Roosevelt thought about running.  He was at the GOP convention and was speaking for the Mugwump reformers.  He didn’t win the election for the republican nominee for president, but instead ran for the mayoral election of 1886. He went 0-2 for running for elections as he got third in the mayoral election.  He then stopped running for offices and left New York and opened up a ranch in North Dakota.  He became busy trying to become a cowboy and he learned techniques to ride and rope animals as well as hunt these animals.  He became the sheriff of the city and started his political career again.

He helped campaign for Benjamin Harrison, and when Harrison won the election he appointed Roosevelt to the Civil Service Commission.  He served for 7 years on the commission and then in 1897 Roosevelt was appointed the position of Assistant Secretary of the Navy.  Roosevelt resigned as the position of Assistant Secretary of the Navy when the war on Cuba started.

When he left he became friends with a colonel of the U.S army.  This colonel, Leonard Woods, and Roosevelt started their own cavalry, the newspapers called them the Rough Riders.  They were first stationed in San Antonio for training and after weeks of training they were sent to Cuba to fight.  They were sent with high-powered guns and ammunition designed for destruction.  They fought bravely and continued to fight for the U.S until the war was ended and they were sent back to U.S.

Theodore Roosevelt became the President of the United Stated in 1901 when Former President McKinley was shot.  Roosevelt entered his presidency on a huge note inviting Booker T. Washington to have a dinner with him.  This sparked a riot and then President Roosevelt answered with saying that Booker T. Washington would be welcomed to any dinner with himself.  Roosevelt brought change in the country and most of that was very good.  He supported organized labor in the United States, which most big companies disagreed with.  He brought 30 antitrust suits and tore down the biggest railroad company and oil company.  Those are some of the major things that Roosevelt did in the president’s position.

A fun fact about Theodore Roosevelt was his nickname, Teddy.  His nickname was given to him by Morris Michtom.  Roosevelt was hunting in Mississippi when everyone he was hunting with tied up a bear and ordered Roosevelt to shoot it.  Roosevelt said that the killing of this animal would be unsportsmanlike and didn’t shoot it.  This became a public cartoon and the owner of a toy store found this funny.  Morris Michtom sent a letter to Roosevelt asking to use his name “Teddy” as the name for the toy he was going to make and Roosevelt said yes.  This is when Morris Michtom made the Teddy Bear.

A childhood picture of Theodore Roosevelt.  He grew up with many difficulties like asthma and problems with his health.  He was born on October
27, 1858.

This is a posting of Theodore Roosevelt running for governor of New York City.  He didn't win the election but still became a prominent figure in America

This is Teddy Roosevelt's picture for his job of naval assistant before he became big with the Rough Riders.

This is a picture of Teddy Roosevelt when he was the leader of the Rough Riders.  He team went into war for the United States and helped it overcome many deaths.

This is my framed picture and bullet from the Gatling gun that Theodore Roosevelt used in the Battle of San Juan Hill.  The picture was taken after they defeated the troops at San Juan and the bullet was shot from the Gatling guns used in the battle.

This is a picture of what the Gatling gun from when Teddy Roosevelt used would look like.  They weren't very sturdy but were very effective on the battle field.

This is a picture of Theodore Roosevelt walking off stage after giving a speech as President of the United States of America.  He served two terms and conquered many things as President.

This is Teddy of today.  The maker of teddy bears used the name Teddy when he saw the comic strip about Teddy Roosevelt and his troubled hunt in Mississippi.

Harry Lamin

Harry Lemin was a soldier in the World War 1 era.  The battles were very intense and were hard to get through as a unit.  Many troops were lost in the battles and the number was very high when the war ended.  The blog about Harry started in July of 2007, but Harry's writings didn't occur until August 1917.  The blogger wanted to present his letters 90 years after they had been wrote by Harry.  Harry left behind a one year old son named Willie nicknamed Bill as he got older.  Just imagine how hard it would have been to leave a one year old at home, and still how hard it is for people going into the army today. Harry went to training in February of 1917.  The war was going on at this moment and the English army was trying to hurry their foot soldiers through the camp to get them to the front lines as fast as they could.  In training camp, the soldiers had to get vaccines to protect them from diseases that they could obtain from training and from being on the front lines.  Harry talks about how the English soldiers don’t have much to eat, they eat bread and jam dripping, excess grease.  These soldiers that went through training were trained to battle, but not survive the trenches that they were thrown into.  Information that Harry obtained he sent to his family, some of that information was about the Arcadian.  The Arcadian was a huge ship that transported military ammunition.  It was sunk by a German submarine on April 15, 1917.  When Harry finally gets to the front lines he is thrown into the trenches to fight.  He says that in the tranches that mud is one of the main things people need to watch out for, except all of the opposition’s troops and shelling coming your way.  Mud would slow down the people and cause them to be easily targeted by any opposing’s troops. Mud didn’t only stop troops, it slowed down the medics from getting to wounded soldiers as shown in the picture below.

Harry was in the battle of Passchendaele and said it was a horrific battle.  One day that they were battling they rain was so bad that the mud became so hard to get through that these 6 people above with the stretcher had a hard time getting the wounded to a medic.  Harry talks about all the battles he was in and said that they were all bad.  He feared for his life everytime he went over the boundary of the trench.

Labor Leader

I am a labor leader and I do not agree with what is going on in the factories in today’s world.  Women are working for less a day than what they spend on food.  Women need to be paid more and have safer conditions to work in.  Look at the fire in the factory that just happened.  The Owners were so strict and wanted to make as much profit that they locked other doors so they could inspect bags of the women going out to save fabric.  They ended up killing the ladies by leaving and not telling the women that the building was one fire.  Women need to be able to work in comfort and be able to make enough money to help out their families.  These labor union are just what these women need and all factories should be forced to follow the guidelines set by these unions.  It would save lives, and help families out.  Why are owners being so sticky with their money worrying how they are going to get the most profit when their workers are being paid little money and being harmed in the process of working?  This has got to stop and all factories need to be up to date on safety and follow guidelines on protecting their workers.

Free Labor

I am one of the northern white men looking to move my family west.  I believe there will be more opportunity for my family to live out there.  Manifest destiny states that we have the desire to explore the continent as far west as we can.  We are destined to move west and explore this continent that we live on.  Free labor is the most important thing when moving out west.  It causes white people to actually have a job when we move out west.  The slave traders are so used to using slaves that they believe they need slaves to move out west.  Northern white people, like myself, would benefit from working on these farms until we get enough money to move onto our own farm and raise our own house from the bottom up.  These wages are being taken from us white people and the slaves take our jobs.  People from the south need to realize to make this country strong every white man needs a job to prove for his country.  When the white get enough money they will put the money back into the economy and then the country will prosper from that.

Federalist blog

Back in the when the constitution was about to ratified, there were two groups of people.  One group supported the ratification of the constitution.  The other group was against the constitution.  The one that wanted the constitution to be ratified were called the federalists.  The group that didn't want the constitution to be ratified were called the anti-federalist.  The federalist were the better half.  Being a federalist made you believe in more central government.  This government could protect you more as it proved troops from every state to help protect the well-being of the country.  If the states had their own governments to run they wouldn't have as many troops to protect their well-being.  Federalists believe in the constitution and thought it would be the answer to the problems that the United States faced.  With a more central government, people would give up some rights, but would get protection.  Protection was a big thing.  We had just won the war and thought that Great Britain still was a threat and any country that did not help us out with the war.  Protection is what I would have fought for and won.

Stamp Act Project

Tyler Seibert

Prof. Holden

Stamp Act

2-16-14

1.  Britain had a huge debt from the war with France, and they couldn’t alone make up the debt.  They decided to tax the colonies to help with the debt.

2. The colonies stated that the “Writs of Assistance” the government didn’t need any evidence that the colonist did anything wrong, but still could go into homes and businesses and get things.  The colonist declared that this was against the constitution.

3. Some colonist sent petitions to the government official, others published pamphlets.  Some people even ordered more smuggled items to their shops.  Some people were asked to not buy the taxable items.  People would get into crowds and boycott.

4.  The stamp act was a list of things that the British Government could tax the American people on.  There were so many things taxed like: license to sell wine, bills, bonds, and passports.  Exports were also taxed.  There a lot of things taxed and some of these things were ridiculous to tax.

5.  Franklin’s response to why Americans resisted to the Stamp Act was that there were no colonist in Parliament to vote and speak for the colonists.  Franklin goes on to say that an external tax in on imported items and then the tax they pay on the item, then the owners put the price of the tax on top of the items price to get their money back.  If people don’t want to pay the extra money for the item they don’t have to buy it.  The internal tax is forced on the people to pay it without their consent.

6. If you want to tax the colonies just tax imports for the business men.  They can get the money back on the items they sell.  And, put some colonist in parliament so that they have a say and won’t get enraged with some of the decisions.

7. The date of this source is November 2oth 1765.  This article is from a newspaper called the North Carolina Gazette.

8. October 19th 1765- a hanging was watched by a crowd of 500 people

October 31st- another hanging was watched by a crowd

November 16th- a stamp act officer was forced to sign a resignation sheet, then they carried him in an arm chair and carried him around the court house

Monday 18th- letters were sent to the inhabitants of the province requesting their presences at his seat in Brunswick.

Monday 18th- the inhabitants hung and burned Dr. William Huston.

9.  It seems that everyday people hated the Stamp Act and did anything possible to get rid of the Act.  They hated being taxed all the time for the job they helped the British with

10. I believe that the writings were for the British to read what was going on in the colonies.  The author was Peter Oliver.

11. One event that Oliver talked about was the incident with the so called, ”mob”.  When the “Mob” broke into the Office of the Register of the Admiralty.  They did some destruction and went after the officers, but the officers hid themselves and were not hurt.

The next incident that Oliver talked about was when the Secretary of the Province was attacked.  The mob took him to a place where he was forced to sign his resignation.

12.  The perspective of the author is that everyone in the colonies is against the British.  He, only, speaks about the bad things happening to the British executive and appointed officials.

13.  It seems to me that they are targeting the colonist that want to abolish the British government in America.  They are talking about some things that are dangerous or are becoming dangerous.  I believe the writings are for the colonists.

14.  They are stating that some things that have been resolved or agreed upon in that colony.  They are stating things that could become dangerous in the colonies

15. This could be a reprint from the guy who actually printed this article.  Then, if that happened, it would be considered a secondary source.

16.  It serves as a primary source as the guy who wrote it was from when the actions actually happened.   A primary source is when a person saw what happened and wrote about it.  That is what this author did.

17.   I believe that when I read this article it changed my opinion a little bit.  It changed a little based on some of the things that the British taxed.  I think the British went a little overboard when they taxed that many things.  Some of the things they taxed I would even, now, get angry with if it got taxed.  Like to get a license to sell you got taxed for that.  Just to get a license they taxed the process.  I think that if some of the colonists would have been allowed to be a part of the parliament that, the colonists may not have been so mad to where they wanted to fight back.  I think reading some of these primary sources that it broaden my perspective on the whole issue.  It comes back to if the British changed a few things, would have the colonists reacted the way they did.  The Stamp Act was blown out of proportion by the British and the colonist acted extremely poorly to the situation.  Even though I say that they did act poorly, I am glad to be an American and not part of Britain.

Colonial State

If I were a colonist and had the decision to choose a colony to live in it would have been Boston.  Boston was a big port in that time.  Boston was a lively city and had many revolutionists in the city.  I feel like I would have had a chance to become a big part in the movement of becoming our own country.  There were many people living in Boston and that means opportunity to become a worker or own you own business.  There was a big problem though in the city of Boston.  Much of the wealth in Boston was owned by a few people in total percent of people living in Boston.  That is a big drawback, but that means that if you were in the small percent you were well off.  The Boston tea party would have been my favorite part of living in Boston.  I would have loved to participate in the dumping of the King's tea in the harbor.  Those are a few reasons why I would live in Boston.
